Cultural Connections: Spain

Carla Román is a visiting scholar from Spain conducting her research advised by Dr. Erdal Ozkan in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) at OSU. She is collaborating closely with Dr. Hongyoung Jeon and Dr. Heping Zhu of the USDA’s Application Technology Research Unit, located in the FABE Building at CFAES Wooster Campus.

She obtained her bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, where she specialized in fruit and vineyard pest control. She then completed her Master's degree in Integrated Pest Management with a specialization in plant pathology at the University of Lleida, Spain. She obtained her Ph.D. at the same university but focused on sustainable and efficient pesticide application techniques and pesticide use rate reduction. Currently, the main focus of her research is the variable rate application of pesticides through the development and validation of a new sprayer equipped with a canopy detection system based on stereo vision.

Javier Campos is a visiting scholar from Spain doing his PostDoc in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) at OSU. He is located at Wooster FABE building collaborating with the USDA’s Application Technology Research Unit housed in the same location. He received his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2014, a Master's degree in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2016, and a Ph.D. in Agri-food Technology and Biotechnology from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2021. While pursuing his graduate education in Spain, he was also involved in extension programs training farmers around Spain and Portugal to reduce the use of pesticides and avoid environmental and operator risks during the pesticide application process. His current research is focused on the implementation of improvements in pesticide application techniques to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the application process.
